MAN AND SEA, FISHING AND SAILING

Founded in 1948 by the City Council of Gozón, it stands for the doyen of Asturian museums. It is an open and world-wide museum, dedicated to the maritime culture, mainly Asturian and Cantabrian, interesting and entertaining thanks to its wide range of objects.

The exhibition is set into four main groups:

Marine biology. Introducing the marine life, displays a great amount of flora and fauna specimen, from a million of year old fossils to the ones alive and kicking seen today in aquariums.

Ship’s carpentry. Display about the building of traditional wooden boats through photos, plans, designs, tools and implements suitable for this craft.

Traditional fishing. It completes the former one and allows to discover the way our ancestors earned their living. Here we find fishing tackle, boats and many complements such as anchors, garments, basketwork, etc.

The history of sailing. More than fifty scale models reveal how boats evolved in shape from ancient times to nowadays. Sea rescue, the Spanish Armada and the Asturian Merchant Navy have their place in here. There is also a big collection of maritime iconography of different materials (pottery, ivory, glass), as well as popular art, toy boats and other objects related to the marine world.

Specialized library and documentary archives.

The Maritime Museum sets facing the lovely bay of Luanco, full of promenades and paths that invite to marvel. The Cape Peñas stands for the most outstanding and impressive exponent of this village, surrounded by rural bucolic spots.
