The municipal government of Caso opened the Caso wood museum in December 2001. It is seated in Veneros, in a sixteenth century casona (typical Asturian large house). The museum displays a thematic exhibition in which the importance of the wood in the traditional Asturian society is shown, with special attention to the footwear made with this material: the wooden-shoe (madreña).

The building has two floors and an attic designed to be a store and to the internal services of the museum. The visit starts in the ground floor in a hall devoted to forest and tools where can be seen the different kinds of wood used by Asturian farmers to manufacture implements, domestic objects, buildings, etc, and tools for the tree felling. The exhibition is rounded off with an audio-visual documentary that is an introduction to the museum.

In the first floor are exhibited wooden-shoes coming from the different regions of Europe, north of the Iberian Peninsula and, mostly, of Asturias and the county of Caso; Alfonso Fernández Canteli donated this collection to the museum. The exhibition also shows the tools used by the wooden-shoe makers and the use of the wooden-shoes.

The visit to the museum is rounded off with a route by the village of Veneros where you can see the different uses given to wood: buildings such as the hórreos (raised granaries) or the manufacture of different implements: llabiegos (ploughs), angazos (rakes), truébanos (beehives), etc.

An ancient washing place in Pendones, 9 kilometres from Veneros, accommodates the wooden-shoe maker workshop. Here it is possible to see the work of the wooden-shoe maker from Caso, Luis Testón, watching the manufacture of this kind of footwear and the tools needed to do it.

The Wood Museum is located in the Natural Park of Redes, that comprises the counties of Caso and Sobrescobio, and turned into Biosphere Reserve in 2001. The park, placed in the centre-western sector of the Cantabrian Mountain range, is crossed by the River Nalón, and has big forests of beech and oak trees.
